Suhrawardi: touch the glass

اعلم أنّ الصورة ليست في المرآة

Know that the form is not in the mirror.

Ḥikmat al-Ishrāq, §104. His test follows: touch the glass with your finger, an arm's length from your face, and the distance between the image of your finger and the image of your face is more than the mirror's depth can hold.

  • Touch a mirror with a fingertip, your face an arm's length away. Which image looks farther away, the finger's or the face's? By how much?
  • The glass is a few millimetres thick. Where does the rest of that distance fit?
  • On a video call, where is the face you are talking to?

Pick one. That is the first session.
