Mirror · d. 1111

al-Ghazali: three things, not two

المرآة غير وصور الأشخاص غير وحصول مثالها في المرآة غير

The mirror is one thing, the forms of persons another, and the arrival of their likeness in the mirror a third.

Iḥyāʾ ʿUlūm al-Dīn, Book of the Marvels of the Heart. In the same passage: knowledge is the arrival of the likeness in the mirror.

  • Look into a mirror, then step aside. What stayed in the glass?
  • A photograph keeps your face after you leave. A mirror does not. Which one is more like knowing?
  • A machine keeps a likeness of everything it has read, long after the page is gone. Is keeping the same as knowing?

Pick one. That is the first session.
