Ibn Sina: the face is not where you see it

إنّ الناظر في المرآة يتخيّل له في المرآة أنه يرى صورته وليس كذلك

The one looking into the mirror imagines that he sees his form in the mirror, and it is not so.

al-Shifāʾ, al-Nafs, Book III, chapter 5.

  • Hold a hand mirror and look at your face. Now turn it over. Where did your face go?
  • In a mirror, are you seeing yourself, or something standing in for you?
  • When a machine describes the world to you, are you looking at the world, or at a mirror?

Pick one. That is the first session.
